New unique laser welding machine

Multiroller round

On 1 January 2013, Formula Air, a full-service supplier of industrial ventilation and dust extraction solutions will activate its new, fully-automatic rolling and laser welding line. This type of technology, which is used by other companies, including BMW, is ideally suited for the production of high-quality (galvanized) piping and ducting components and will enable Formula Air to produce components of between Ø80 and Ø1000 millimetres in diameter, at plate thicknesses of between 0.6 and 3 millimetres and a maximum length of 2000 millimetres, from a single piece. “This new facility will make us unique in the market”, explained the company’s managing directors Ad van Hoof and Martin van Zetten.

This new production line at Formula Air was developed in Southern Germany and will be installed at the company’s production site in Beek en Donk. Its speciality will be rolling and longitudinal-seam laser welding of pipework and ducting panels – not only made from galvanized steel, but also aluminium or stainless steel.
Laser-welding is a reliable and widely-used welding technique. What sets it apart from other welding processes is the fact that it is also capable of welding Sendzimir-galvanized panels, which are widely used in industry. The speed and intensity of the laser, supported by the addition of gases within an enclosed environment, means that the zinc does not have time to burn, which in turn enables a high-quality result to be achieved.

As Ad van Hoof and Martin van Zetten went on to explain, what sets Formula Air’s new production line apart is its ability to process a wide range of dimensions. “What makes this particular production line unique is its ability to carry out laser welding fully automatically at small diameters and plate thicknesses, which, when the cost of raw materials is high, are the order of the day. What is more, fully-automated production means that the entire production process only needs to be supervised by a single operator. This innovative production line offers unprecedented possibilities for the production of high-quality piping and ducting for use in a large number of industries. In addition to ventilation and dust extraction, these also include boiler-making and flue construction. With this new production line, we will be able to provide an even more comprehensive service to our clients, so that they can focus on their core business. Together, we can ensure that the working environment is a cleaner and healthier place!”

The benefits of the new production line at Formula Air, at a glance:

  • Precision and damage-free rolling and laser-welding of piping and ducting (including galvanized)
  • A wide range of dimensions (diameters from Ø 80 to 1000 millimetres, with plate thicknesses of 0.6 – 3 millimetres and a maximum length of 2000 millimetres from a single piece)
  • Ergonomic production; high-quality end-products
